Family Weekend C.A.R.E. holds family weekends four times per year. This program is an intense weekend with a schedule of both therapeutic and educational activities. It is designed specifically for those with family members who have had, or who are presently in treatment.
Topics generally discussed will include but not be limited to:
- Dealing with the terrorist in your family: Participants will learn to effectively communicate and set boundaries to avoid being manipulated, lied to and otherwise controlled by the addict in the family. Special attention will be paid to determining the difference between enabling and love. After Treatment: What next? This group will help participants understand the supportive role of the family when the patient completes treatment. It will emphasize the division of responsibility.
- Dealing with Disaster: What to do in the event of relapse and/or crisis
- Family Support: What about me? This workshop reflects on the stress placed on the patient’s family. It will focus on the needs of families, counseling, support groups etc.
- Both points of view: An interactive discussion between family members and patients currently in treatment.

C.A.R.E. recognizes that the family is often as addicted as the addict. Although the named patient may be using drugs and/or gambling, the patient’s family is often equally dysfunctional. The family frequently requires additional treatment as well. The Family Rehab experience allows the family to attend many of the same groups as the patient. With the patient they receive intensive family therapy, experience Alanon and Naranon meetings, participate in recreational activities and begin to build a bond with their patient.
It is also an opportunity for the family to experience the rehab and learn what the patient will be expected to do when they return home. The major focus of this program is to provide the family with the tools they will need when the patient returns home.
