“We've come to believe that addiction is a disease, but have been treating it the same way for nearly 70 years” states a doctor who just penned his first book on how he treated his alcohol addiction with a muscle relaxer. The general idea of the book suggests that if rehab cannot guarantee 100% success in patients for the rest of their lives, it is not a viable way to cure any addiction. A quick fix is needed and this comes in the form of using another drug.
The cardiologist speaks of how he cured his addiction to alcohol, stating that he has achieved the impossible: complete freedom of craving by use of another drug Baclofen. Suggesting that this is a quick fix to addiction and reaffirming his belief that drug rehab is often a tedious cycle and many who leave drug rehab centers will only relapse later in life. In the book he spoke of celebrities who star on shows fresh out of rehab, bright-eyed and talking about what they have discovered and how they will stay clean. “And they HAVE discovered something”, he says. “It just doesn't last.”
Maybe taking a pill is the fastest cure, but is it the safest? And is it really solving the root of the problem? Where do we stop? Do we take drugs to quit gambling? To cure sex addicts? To keep us off the internet and away from the TV? Unlike a pill, a drug rehabilitation center teaches you how to deal with your addiction head on. Not how to mask it. What happens if there are side affects to these cure all drugs and we’re not comfortable living with them? If we have to take the pill away, won’t the addiction return? It may not be a quick fix, but the knowledge and the steps in dealing with drug addiction taught in a drug rehabilitation center are without a doubt lifelong, and if applied correctly, the safest and best end all to one's addiction.
